Computer Mouse
A computer mouse is a small device that controls the cursor in the computer as you move it around and let you easily choose things on the screen. It was invented by a Stanford Institute researcher, Douglas Engelbart in 1968. In those times, computers are difficult to use as everything must be typed manually, and if things were done wrong, there’s no way you can change them. So Engelbart studied and invented a device which can be used to navigate the computer easier.
From then on, it became popular as it provides computer users an ease and convenience in using computer. The first computer mouse was operated with two hands, but later on, it was changed so that only one hand will be needed to use it. A typical mouse contains a trackball in the bottom that rolls on the surface of the pad when being moved. It was the kind of mouse that was used in 70s, 80s and even 90s. But today, optical mouse and laser mouse are the ones mostly used by computer users.
The optical mouse uses a light-emitting diode to rapidly capture images and digital signal processing (DSP) to detect motion. Commonly, you can see the visible red light when it is connected to the pc, and that what makes the mouse detects movement. Most modern optical mouse has image processing techniques to capture the surface where it moves, which allows the user to use it even without a mousepad. However, optical mouse cannot detect movements on specular or shiny surfaces like glass table, or mirror.
The laser mouse is somehow works similarly to the optical. The only difference is the absence of light in the device. This is because it uses an invisible laser to capture patterns and detect movement. Another thing is that it is more sensitive than the optical as it can track signal at a resolution of up to 2000 dots per inch compared to the 800 dpi of the optical mouse.
Today, you can find different styles, shapes and sizes of computer mouse. There are styles available which can reflect your personality – from sporty type to simple one, you can choose whatever style you desire. You can also find mouse that will be comfortable on your grip. Mostly, the largest size is the one being used on gaming. The average size of a mouse ranges from 3 to 4 inches long.
You can even find a mouse that is wireless and run with a battery so you don’t need to connect it to the pc. This kind of mouse is power-saving. There are types of mouse that are germ-free. They are coated with titanium dioxide and silver nano-particle compound which deactivate the enzymes and prevent the growth of bacteria, virus and fungi from surviving in your small pointing device. If this kind of mouse still doesn’t make you feel safe, you can also find other types of computer mouse that contain water-resistant material, which allows you to hand-wash them if desired.
